Double 4" traditional lap siding is patterned after v-groove lap siding. This siding commonly has a 4" panel exposure, at least a " projection that creates a realistic and dramatic shadow line, and is often used for a more historic look and decorative accents.

Double 5" traditional lap siding offers 25% more siding panel exposure on the wall than 4" siding, and a narrower reveal than 6" traditional lap siding, and can give a larger home a more modern look.
